The Importance of Resistance Training
Most literature incorporates
both strength and endurance training into one category called
“Resistance Training”. Regardless of whether training is done to improve
strength or to improve endurance, it is important to include as part of
a regular training program.
Most adults lose about ½ pound of
muscle each year after the age of 20. Muscle mass is associated with
metabolism. Muscle burns calories at a higher rate than fat, so the more
muscle you have, the more efficient you are (and the more you need to
eat). Resistance training builds muscle to prevent or reduce muscle loss
and help improve metabolism – a key to maintaining your weight.
Benefits of Resistance Training
In addition to the physical appearance benefits,
here are some of the other benefits shown in the literature:
- Improved blood pressure
- Increased bone density
- Improved metabolic function
- Improved balance and shock
absorbency
- Improved body composition
Increased strength of muscles and
connective tissue which decreases the risk of injury.
Resistance training has two
different, sometimes confused meanings - a more broad meaning that
refers to any training that uses a resistance to the force of muscular
contraction (better termed strength training), and elastic resistance,
which refers to a specific type of strength training that uses
elastic tension to provide this resistance. This article discusses the
more limited definition, of elastic resistance training.
Basic principles
Resistance training is a form
of strength training in which each effort is performed against a
specific opposing force generated by resistance (i.e. resistance to
being pushed, squeezed, stretched or bent). Exercises are isotonic
if a body part is moving against the force. Exercises are isometric
if a body part is holding still against the force. Resistance exercise
is used to develop the strength and size of skeletal muscles. Properly
performed, resistance training can provide significant functional
benefits and improvement in overall health and well-being.
The goal of resistance training,
according to the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), is to
"gradually and progressively overload the musculoskeletal system so it
gets stronger." Research shows that regular resistance training will
strengthen and tone muscles and increase bone mass. Resistance training
should not be confused with weightlifting, powerlifting or bodybuilding,
which are competitive sports involving different types of strength
training with non-elastic forces such as gravity (weight training or
plyometrics) an immovable resistance (isometrics, usually the body's own
muscles or a structural feature such as a doorframe). Full range of
motion is important in resistance training because muscle overload
occurs only at the specific joint angles where the muscle is worked.

Ice
Lighting Speed
Resistance and over-speed training at its best!!
How the System Works
When working on power training and skating speed, two
players at a time are used. Each player wears a SPEEDSTER Waist Belt with a Lightning
Cord attached between them. The lead player has the Lightning Cord attached to the back
side of his belt while the trail player has the Lightning Cord attached in front of his
belt. The trail player also has a holding strap which a third player uses to hold the
trail player as the lead player skates and stretches the Lightning Cord. As the lead
player skates ahead the Lightning Cord provides resistance between them. When the lead
player has started to slow down the trail player is released, immediately creating a
tremendous amount of speed. With proper technique, this system will not only lengthen
stride, it will also create a faster leg repetition between each stride.
The resistance training in combination with the
over-speed
training develops a player that can skate with a tremendous amount of power and speed.
These training ideas can also be used with Inline skates, though a great amount of caution
should be demonstrated.
